The onward trip to Swakopmund offers you the opportunity to stop at Solitaire and taste the well-known Apple Pie with a refreshing cup of coffee before continuing on along the gravel road, which leads us through two geologically fascinating canyons into another section of the Namib Naukluft National Park, which shows us abandoned mines, the age-old Welwitschia mirabilis plant and a variety of game species around the Zebra Pans. Soon we reach a point where the ephemeral Kuiseb River acts as a natural boundary between the Namib Dune belt (Namibia’s second World Heritage site) and the gravel plains of the Namib Desert. Leaving the blistering desert heat behind we arrive at the Atlantic coastline and Swakopmund, where we spent the following two nights. The rest of the day is spent at leisure in this tranquil coastal town, often also aptly referred to as the “playground of Namibia” due to many activities that are on offer here. In Swakopmund, you will have the option of participating in some of the adventurous activities on offer. After breakfast, you continue into the Damaraland where you visit Twyfelfontein, a World Heritage Site and an “open-air art gallery” that boasts over 2500 different Bushman rock engravings and rock paintings. Close to Twyfelfontein, you can also visit a Living Museum of the Damara, the original inhabitants of Damaraland. Your journey continues to the foothills of the Grootberg massif, in stunning scenery set amidst the ancient Etendeka lava flows of northern Damaraland. Here the ancient basalt has been slowly eroded over millennia, leaving scattered boulders lying upon dramatic flat-topped mountains. The emphasis here is on Nature, and the eco-friendly camp bears testimony to the many riches. Desert-adapted wildlife forges a precarious existence amongst the towering basalt mountains and Mopani-shaded rivers beds of the Kunene region. This unforgiving landscape is a refuge to a diverse number of plant and mammal species. Desert elephant and black rhino share boulder-strewn valleys with watchful cheetah and thundering herds of oryx. Dew darkened game trails show the heavy track marks of a lion and the mountain zebra they hunt. Here one is reminded that we are all guests of Mother Nature.
